Canon EOS Youth Ambassador candidates 2018 with Mr Jeffrey Kung, Mr Asmady Ahmad and Mr Cliff Pek on the first week of the course in February 2018.

The Canon EOS Youth Ambassador programme kicked off the first week with a dive into the technicals of photography equipment with Mr Asmady Ahmad and a printing workshop with Mr Chai Kok Leong. Mr Asmady introduced us to Canon's brand and history, and the full range of it's product line. But the first quick taste of photography we had was during the second class where Mr CKL assigned us to shoot around the Canon HQ and print out our works. At the beginning of each class, we were required to introduced ourselves, and from here, I was introduced to the bunch of talented crazies I'd call my weekend family.

It was great to meet the other EOS Youth Ambassador candidates - there were some with years of experience in photography, some working professional photographers, and some who enjoyed a particular branch (bird photography! Olympic ice skating! Conceptual photos with accompanying poems!). I also fully respected those who lived outside Kuala Lumpur, as some of the candidates were from Penang, and even Sabah, who made their way to the Canon HQ in Shah Alam to attend the course. We were all within the age range of 18-30+, and everyone started off this program in good spirits!

Initially I thought the rest of the course was going to be like this: attending lectures in a classroom environment, with a quick outdoor practical session. But the third class, a Lighting workshop with Mr Andrew Koh, proved to be much much different!

We all packed up into a bus early on a weekend morning to Number One Studio in Ukay Heights. Sitting on bean bags on the top floor of his photography studio, we were shown various methods of lighting, and the superbly cool Canon Speedlite 470EX-AI. Unfortunately my hot shoe is in bad shape (my 600D has been knocked around a lot lol) so I couldn't try it on my dslr, but trust me guys, if I was going pro (or rich) I'd be buying that Speedlite in a heartbeat haha.

Anyway, it was really great to be in a creative studio environment again. Our task of the day was to test our skills in different lighting modes (studio and natural light). We got to use reflectors, speedlites, softbox and lenses courtesy of Canon, taking turns to have 5-7 minutes directing the models. One of my key observations during this session was the importance of courtesy in directing and interacting with models: how you control the situation, and the words you use to work with people is imperative to professionalism and a positive outcome.

That weekend, Mr Andrew Koh also taught us about Digital Photo Professional, Canon's own editing software. I'm always  interested in methods of post processing so that session was pretty cool. It works for RAW images taken from Canon cameras only, and you'd need a separate software if you wanted to save 'presets', unlike Lightroom. The first two weeks wrapped up with all of us in high spirits and excited to try out more Canon cameras haha.

DPP's interface.

Model Lemon Kim under guidance with my studio lighting supervision skills. I felt that the exposure balance is a bit harsh. But I think it's a fair enough try for a first timer!

Model Yien Yii posing for my natural photo outtake.

Outdoors - probably my favourite photo that I took of Jaquee. It's way more conceptual than a proper portrait / lighting picture but I like it haha.
