A New Hope

How do I put into words the rollercoaster that has been happening in this past two days, no, months leading up to Malaysia's 14th General Elections? The full spectrum of emotions being felt: nervous, excited, anxious, angry, apprehensive, incredulous... all culminating to one, tiny bit of hope. Against the avalanche of odds and 61 years of ruling, change has happened in my home country.

Since I started working in Malaysia in October 2017, it feels like a crash course into the world of politics. Especially recently, almost all conversations (particularly at work) was related to this agenda. I've been a fly on the wall, witnessing from the side that has tried to defend their hold on Malaysia. From working on manifestos, taking part in campaign meetings, preparing marketing presentations for the former Prime Minister, it's been a learning curve and an eye opening experience to grasp the inner workings of what it takes to have power.

There are so many aspects to the whole conversation. I don't deny my gratitude that BN has led our country in periods of prosperity, recession, and above all, peace. There are some leaders in the party that I admire very much for their contribution towards the people, for their sincerity in holding office, and for their efforts in making their respective states a better place. However, it's long come to the point that the corrupted actions of a certain few in disadvantage of the nation, has necessitated for a big change.

These past few months, I've met first time voters, contesting candidates, manifesto makers in PWTC, pro govt, pro opposition, journalists, overseas Malaysians, some undi rosak people, and even those who couldn't care less. It's been an intake of a lot of information, emotion and expression from those within my network on the pros and cons of various leadership. But undeniably, when the elections results came out, and Malaysia swore in our 7th Prime Minister, almost everyone I spoke to shared their sentiments of hope. Hope for change. Hope for integrity in ruling. Hope for a better Malaysia.

To the generation that is looking at this moment and recognising that it's the rakyat who has power... Here's to a brighter future. Here's to making Malaysia a better place.
